Matar al mensajero

Me encontraba en un país de los nuestros, e íbamos con los integrantes de nuestro equipo de comunicaciones para comer en un restaurante recomendado. De pronto, se oyeron disparos y también los gritos de personas diciendo que se trataba de un asalto.

Mi primera e instintiva reacción fue correr (de hecho, lo hice) con mi cámara lista para graficar el hecho. Pero dos colegas casi se colgaron de mí para tirarnos al suelo y guarecernos ante el peligro de recibir una bala.

En ese caso, se trataba de delincuentes comunes y nosotros solo personas de los medios de comunicación que queríamos hacer nuestro trabajo de informar. Sin embargo, tenemos un problema en México: en lo que del año se ha asesinado a 8 periodistas. Lo peor, es que parece que aun no se da con los hechores, o, lo que es más grave, las autoridades policiales no tienen a sospechosos detenidos.

Matar al mensajero es una frase metafórica que se refiere al acto de culpar a una persona que trae malas noticias en vez del autor de las mismas. Anteriormente, los mensajes eran enviados por un emisario humano. A veces, durante la guerra, por ejemplo, se enviaba a un emisario desde un campamento enemigo. Un combatiente provocado fácilmente después de haber recibido dichas noticias podía desquitar su ira con más facilidad en el mensajero que en el responsable de las malas noticias.

El consejo «No mates al mensajero» fue expresado (muy oblicuamente) por Shakespeare en la segunda parte de su obra Enrique IV (1598),​ así como en Antonio y Cleopatra. Cuando se le dice que Antonio se ha casado con otra mujer, Cleopatra amenaza con tratar los ojos del mensajero como pelotas, a lo que este responde: «Graciosa señora, yo que traigo las noticias no he hecho a la pareja».​ Mucho antes de eso, un sentimiento parecido fue expresado en la Antígona de Sófocles cuando se dice: «Nadie ama al mensajero que trae malas noticias».

"Expresamos nuestra preocupación por la falta de resultados en muchas de las investigaciones abiertas para esclarecer casos anteriores de asesinato de periodistas en México. Tomamos nota de las detenciones, realizadas en relación a los asesinatos ocurrido en 2022 y esperamos que los procedimientos judiciales en estos casos y otros permitan identificar y sancionar a los autores materiales e intelectuales", se expone en el documento emitido por el Parlamento Europeo.

¿Tiene esa declaración algún efecto que signifique un resguardo de la vida de periodistas y reporteros que son amenazados constantemente y con el riesgo de se ser asesinados?  Nosotros creemos que no. Que son una especie de anuncio en papel mojado, que, a poco de leerse, se deshacen y desaparecen.

Los que anuncian noticias, no siempre son bien recibidos. Y hoy, en el milenio 21, con la gran variedad de medios informativos -incluyendo los llamados medios sociales que se distribuyen a través de la internet- se da el caso “que todos somos reporteros”, porque damos a conocer personas y eventos de los que somos testigos a diario. Pero a veces tales anuncios no son bienvenidos.

Y, sin embargo, los que creemos que tenemos el deber de informar, tenemos que seguir haciéndolo. Y a veces, no, las noticias no van ser buenas. Pero nos anima la expresión que viene de antiguo: “¡Grita con toda tu fuerza, no te reprimas! Alza tu voz como trompeta. Denúnciale a mi pueblo sus rebeldías; sus pecados…

kill the messenger

I was in one of our countries, and we were going with the members of our communications team to eat at a recommended restaurant. Suddenly, shots were heard and also the screams of people saying that it was an assault.

My first instinctive reaction was to run (in fact, I did) with my camera ready to record the event. But two colleagues almost hung on me to throw us to the ground and shelter us from the danger of receiving a bullet.

In that case, it was common criminals and we were just media people who wanted to do our job of reporting. However, we have a problem in Mexico: so far this year, 8 journalists have been murdered. The worst thing is that it seems that the perpetrators have not yet been found, or, what is more serious, the police authorities have not arrested suspects.

Kill the messenger is a metaphorical phrase that refers to the act of blaming a person who brings bad news instead of the author of the news. Previously, messages were sent by a human emissary. Sometimes during war, for example, an emissary would be sent from an enemy camp. A combatant easily provoked after receiving such news could more easily take out his anger on the messenger than on the one responsible for the bad news.

The advice "Do not kill the messenger" was expressed (very obliquely) by Shakespeare in the second part of his play Henry IV (1598), as well as in Antony and Cleopatra. When told that Antony has married another woman, Cleopatra threatens to treat the messenger's eyes like balls, to which the messenger replies, "Gracious lady, I who bring the news have not made the couple." Long before that, a similar sentiment was expressed in Sophocles' Antigone when it is said: "No one loves the messenger who brings bad news."

"We express our concern about the lack of results in many of the open investigations to clarify previous cases of murder of journalists in Mexico. We take note of the arrests, made in relation to the murders that occurred in 2022, and we hope that the judicial procedures in these cases and others allow the material and intellectual authors to be identified and punished", is stated in the document issued by the European Parliament.

Does that statement have any effect that means a protection of the lives of journalists and reporters who are constantly threatened and at risk of being killed? We believe not. That they are a kind of advertisement on wet paper, which, shortly after being read, dissolve and disappear.

Those who announce news are not always well received. And today, in the 21st millennium, with the great variety of information media -including the so-called social media that are distributed through the internet- it is the case that "we are all reporters", because we make known people and events of the that we witness daily. But sometimes such announcements are not welcome.

And yet, those of us who believe we have a duty to inform, we have to continue to do so. And sometimes, no, the news is not going to be good. But we are encouraged by the expression that comes from old: “Scream with all your might, don't hold back! Raise your voice like a trumpet. Denounce their rebellion to my people; their sins...

Los peones de la Guerra

El título de esta columna no es original. Pertenece a un libro publicado después de la guerra de Viet Nam. Y señalaba a Laos y Camboya, como sujetos de experimentación durante esa guerra que dejó millones de civiles muertos durante bombardeos y gases tóxicos que envenenaron la vida y la psiquis de otros tantos millones.

Y mientras eso sucedía, los países de Occidente decidieron mirar para al lado, porque después de todo, los campos de exterminio estaban lejos de casa.

Y eso sucede hoy con la invasión de Rusia en Ucrania. Oh, sí, se adoptan medidas económicas y algunos lugares envían rifles y bombas a las fuerzas que se enfrentan al poderoso ejército ruso.

Pero, y, hay un pero aquí: las causas de esta guerra tienen que ver con la postura rusa que no desea tropa de la OTAN y tampoco misiles en Ucrania al hacerle entrar a esa organización militar. Y Ucrania en todo este tiempo (unos 20 años para acá), ha sido el peón de Europa, con promesas de prosperidad y de igualdad ante los países europeos si se hace miembro de Pacto del Atlántico Norte.

Vladimir Putin, el presidente ruso tiene otros planes para Ucrania. Que nunca abandone la zona de influencia de Rusia y, además, desea, él, Putin que esto sea evidente, porque ha dicho que también quiere tener el alma de la nación. Son declaraciones claras y ciertas que han aparecido en algunos medios de comunicación (no en todos), porque entre Rusia y Ucrania se da también la guerra religiosa entre dos versiones de la Iglesia Ortodoxa, obedeciendo a dos patriarcados distintos…

¿Suena esto familiar a los religiosos del planeta, cuando hemos visto de las guerras religiosas que han asolado al mundo desde siempre? Y eso de “religiosos” incluye a facciones del cristianismo, que, cuando fallan las doctrinas o teologías, se enfrentan con las armas que tengan a la mano.

Cuando escribo estas líneas, recibo las noticas de agencias que dicen que Rusia ha puesto a sus fuerzas nucleares en alerta máxima (llámense misiles o cohetes con cabezas atómicas), lo que podría significar una escalada no solo en la tensión mundial, pero en la posibilidad de destrucción que podría ser catastrófica, no solo para Europa, pero también para el resto del mundo.

Creo que no basta hoy solo con orar, lo cual es un buen ejercicio, individual y colectivo, pero también en llamar la atención de los que detentan el poder (Estados Unidos y Rusia) para que entiendan que este planeta es de propiedad de todos los que lo habitamos y no solo un campo de tiro y de ejercicios militares. Claro, ellos no van a leer esto, porque sus intereses militares y económicos están más allá de la razón. Y, sin embargo, tenemos que decirlo o de gritarlo: paren en su necedad y conversen para detener la matanza y llegar a arreglos que dejen más o menos satisfechos a todos. Y eso hasta que la próxima crisis nos vuelva a estar pendientes y alertas.

The pawns of war

The title of this column is not original. It belongs to a book published after the Viet Nam war. And it pointed to Laos and Cambodia, as subjects of experimentation during that war that left millions of civilians dead during bombings and toxic gases that poisoned the life and psyche of millions of others.

And while that was happening, the countries of the West decided to look to the side, because after all, the extermination camps were far from home.

And that happens today with the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Oh yes, economic measures are being taken and some places are sending rifles and bombs to the forces facing the mighty Russian army.

But, and, there is a but here: the causes of this war have to do with the Russian position that does not want NATO troops and missiles in Ukraine by making that military organization enter. And Ukraine in all this time (about 20 years here), has been the pawn of Europe, with promises of prosperity and equality before European countries if it becomes a member of the North Atlantic Pact.

Vladimir Putin, the Russian president has other plans for Ukraine. That it never leaves Russia's zone of influence and, furthermore, he, Putin, wants this to be evident, because he has said that he also wants to have the soul of the nation. They are clear and true statements that have appeared in some media (not in all), because between Russia and Ukraine there is also a religious war between two versions of the Orthodox Church, obeying two different patriarchates...

Does this sound familiar to the religious of the planet, when we have seen the religious wars that have plagued the world since forever? And that of "religious" includes factions of Christianity, which, when doctrines or theologies fail, confront each other with the weapons at hand.

As I write these lines, I am receiving news from agencies saying that Russia has put its nuclear forces on high alert (call them missiles or rockets with atomic warheads), which could mean an escalation not only in global tension, but in the possibility of destruction that could be catastrophic, not only for Europe, but also for the rest of the world.

I believe that it is not enough today just to pray, which is a good exercise, individually and collectively, but also to draw the attention of those who hold power (the United States and Russia) so that they understand that this planet is the property of all that we inhabit it and not just a shooting range and military exercises. Of course, they are not going to read this, because their military and economic interests are beyond reason. And yet, we have to say it or shout it: stop your foolishness and talk to stop the killing and reach arrangements that leave everyone more or less satisfied. And that until the next crisis makes us aware and alert again.
